It wasn’t a real thing. Not in the physical sense. You couldn’t buy it at a hardware store or tie it to a cleat. But we all grew up dragging it behind us. A thick, invisible cord of inherited tension, secondhand anxiety, and the sharp, whispered warnings of those who came before us.

Don’t go there. Don’t trust that. Don’t be too loud, too proud, too soft, too hard. Keep your head down. The alley is narrow, and the walls are close. So walk
