The Holy Spirit led Jesus into the desolate Judean wilderness. For forty days and forty nights, he fasted—eating no food. He was completely alone, surrounded by rocky terrain, scorching heat, and cold nights. By the end, he was physically weak, exhausted, and intensely hungry.

Then, the devil (Satan) appeared. Seeing Jesus’ physical weakness, he chose the most obvious point of attack. He picked up a smooth, round stone that looked like a small loaf of bread and said: “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” It seemed like a simple, even reasonable request. Why shouldn’t a hungry man eat? Jesus had the power to do it. But the devil’s goal was to get Jesus to use his divine power selfishly, disobeying the Father’s plan and acting independently of trust in God.

Feed your body with bread, but feed your soul with the Word of God. That is how you truly live.
