In the fast-evolving world of industrial automation, software versions often come and go with the tide of technological upgrades. However, certain releases leave a lasting impact on the manufacturing floor. GE Digital’s CIMPLICITY 8.2 (part of the Proficy HMI/SCADA family) represents one such milestone. While later versions (9.0, 10.0, and 2023) have since been released, version 8.2 remains a significant reference point for legacy system stability, mid-2010s automation architecture, and the bridge between traditional SCADA and modern IIoT.
For now, however, CIMPLICITY 8.2 remains a quiet hero in countless control rooms—forgiving, reliable, and familiar to the generation of engineers who built the smart factories of the 2010s. CIMPLICITY 8.2 offered "Hot Backup" redundancy out of the box. In critical applications (oil & gas, water treatment, automotive), if the primary server failed, the secondary server would take over with zero data loss. The 8.2 version refined the failover logic, making the transition seamless for remote I/O and connected clients.
