She looked at Mabel.
She pressed a square.

Mabel’s fingers—translucent, trembling—hovered over the screen. She’d been a schoolteacher in 1922. Lost her larynx to illness before she died. In life, she’d carried a slate and chalk. In death, she’d managed with nods and gestures and the kindness of other ghosts who learned her shorthand.
