So Shark Boy climbed the black slope for the first time in his life. His gill-like neck gasped dry air. His shark skin cracked in the cold wind.
In a coastal town where the black sand beach met the rumbling foothills of an ancient mountain, two children were born on the same night during a strange eclipse. They were named after the forces that shaped their souls: (Shark Boy) and Volkan Kız (Volcano Girl). The Boy of the Deep Shark Boy could not walk properly until he was five, but he could swim like a torpedo. His skin was rough like sandpaper, and when he smiled, his teeth were triangular and sharp. The other children feared him, but the sea adored him.
At the top, he found Volkan Kız sitting alone, hugging her knees.
