She walked to a drawer marked with a symbol like a broken hourglass. Pulled out a thin folder. Handed it to me.

Inside, the air smelled of beeswax, leather, and the faint ghost of jasmine. The room was a library without books—walls lined instead with small drawers, each labeled in a language I didn’t recognize. She led me to a chair. I sat. She remained standing.

She touched the silver key at her throat. “Because three years ago, Julian Cross came to me. He wanted to destroy a woman who had spurned him. I gave him the tools. He used them. She took her own life six months later.”

At the door, I turned. “The question you asked me. The real one. What if I had lied?”

I had been sent by a man who collected secrets the way others collected coins. He wanted leverage over a rival. He sent me with a checkbook and a warning: “Do not underestimate her. She doesn’t break you. She unwinds you.”

“You’re late,” she said. Not accusatory. Simply true.

“You don’t,” she said. “Fear is for amateurs. You want him to forget you exist. Then, when he is most comfortable, you become the reason his hand trembles when he reaches for his morning coffee. You do not attack the castle. You poison the well he drinks from every day without knowing it’s there.”

“You want information about Julian Cross.”
