Jake knows the RDA will return. He does the unthinkable: he tames Toruk , the Great Leonopteryx—a scarlet-and-black winged predator so fearsome that only five Na'vi in history have ridden it. He soars over the floating Hallelujah Mountains and lands at the Tree of Souls, calling all clans to war.
Jake arrives weak, cynical, and alone. He meets Dr. Grace Augustine, the head of the Avatar Program, who despises him. "Your brother was a scientist," she scoffs. "You're just a Marine with a bad back." Her avatars—hybrid Na'vi/human bodies grown from DNA—are for research, not combat. But Quaritch sees Jake differently: "I need a man on the inside."
