Back with Leo, the crying has stopped. He is lying on his back, ears submerged, staring at the corrugated metal roof of the pool pavilion. His toes wiggle in the air. His father, Priya’s husband, holds two fingers under Leo’s neck.
In the shallow end, the lesson devolves into controlled chaos. One toddler refuses to let go of a foam noodle. Another tries to drink the pool water. A third, a boy named Jackson, has decided the lesson is over and is attempting to climb out via his father’s face.
In Sugar Land, the water doesn’t wait. Neither do the toddlers.
