Eva told him she’d "look into it" and hung up. Dexter sat in the dim light of his office, the green glow of his monitor reflecting off his reading glasses. He opened his leather log and wrote: Oct 26 – 06:22 – Inversion detected. Canyon resonance possible. No action taken by municipal authority. Risk: catastrophic. He stared at the word catastrophic for a long moment. Then he closed the log, pulled on his rubber boots, and walked down to the harbor.

"I'm seeing math," Dexter replied. "There's a tongue of warm water sliding under the cold layer. When it hits the shelf break, it's going to rise. Fast." torrent dexter

"The water does," Dexter said, and hung up. Eva told him she’d "look into it" and hung up

On the final page of the log, Eva later found a single line, written in Dexter's steady hand: The torrent doesn't ask permission. Neither should the truth. She never turned the sirens off again. Canyon resonance possible

"No," Dexter said. "You should get to higher ground. Tell your neighbors."

Then the ocean withdrew.
