Alex checked the box. FBinst was a mysterious tool inside WinSetupFromUSB that made USB drives bootable on nearly any computer, even ones that hated USB booting. Now came the magic.

"FAT32," Greta said. "It’s the universal language of old BIOSes. Check the box. Let FBinst work its magic."

Every USB tool he tried—Rufus, the Windows Media Creator—failed. They either crashed, didn't support XP, or couldn't handle the netbook's weird BIOS. winsetupfromusb-1-9

A simple, no-frills window appeared. It looked like software from 2005—gray backgrounds, simple checkboxes, no fancy graphics.

"Don't touch it," Greta said calmly. "Go make tea." Alex checked the box

Alex looked at the drive. The folder name read: winsetupfromusb-1-9 . Alex plugged a blank 8GB USB stick into his modern PC. He opened the WinSetupFromUSB_1-9.exe file.

A scary warning appeared: "All data on the USB drive will be destroyed!" He clicked Yes. "FAT32," Greta said

WinSetupFromUSB 1.9 is not frozen. It uses a background process called fbinst and parted . The progress bar in the main window will only jump to 100% once everything is done. The black window will close when finished. This can take 10–20 minutes. Be patient.
