Earlier that day, in the extended cut not shown in the broadcast version, Sheldon had attempted to explain atomic orbitals to Vanessa, the quiet girl in his homeroom. She’d asked to borrow a pencil. He’d given her a No. 2 and a three-minute lecture on electron cloud models. She’d blinked twice, said “Thanks,” and returned the pencil at the end of the day without a single follow-up question. This, Sheldon concluded, was the emotional equivalent of a particle decaying without releasing energy.
